Tsukiji 築地

The old market district that kept eating after the auctions left — the Outer Market's retail food streets, 24-hour sushi, and a striking 1934 temple.

The Character of Tsukiji

Tsukiji was the world's largest fish market until the wholesale auctions moved to Toyosu in 2018. What stayed is the Outer Market — the dense retail food streets of tamagoyaki stalls, knife shops, dried goods, and sushi counters that never depended on the auction to thrive. It is still one of Tokyo's most concentrated eating districts, best walked early and hungry.
