Ueno 上野

The museum-and-park district that still eats like 1925 — 290-year eel houses, century-old tonkatsu, and Shinobazu Pond shaded teahouses.

The Character of Ueno

Ueno is Tokyo's first museum district. The park houses the National Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and the Western Art Museum (a Le Corbusier original). But the eating culture predates them by centuries — the unagi houses by Shinobazu Pond go back to the Edo era.
